The author does an amazing job of making his characters come alive. So much so that, it is hard to tell if they are fictional or based on real people. In fact, if I'm ever in Budapest, I plan to look up Tibor and see if he answers his phone. Of all the stories, my favorite was Bridges. As so many short stories are often made into films, this would make a great one. An overall enjoyable read.Product details

An urbane, sensitive, and varied exploration, not just of the city, but of the human heart and its varied highways and byways. This touching series of short stories was, like the city in the title, a very pleasant surprise which left me hungry for more.
I'm an assistant book club organizer for Cambridge Book Clubs in Massachusetts. Our group voted on this book, and it was great! It was clearly written with not just care of the characters, but an innovative understanding of people. Budapest has a magic and spirit of character, of history and pride not unlike the Londons and Parises of the world. I thank Gary Brill for sharing such a wonderful reflection of his experiences abroad in this mystical city.
There's dropped-in reminders of history, especially of World War II and Communism. You'll learn a few things, so if you get easily frustrated when you don't understand the historical significance of a story...first of all, don't be that person, because you're missing out. There's romance, comedy, family drama and mystery. Read this book and find out which of these five stories is your favorite.
Very interesting stories about people in a beautiful city. These stories deal with how oppression & history have changed the city & people. The book also shows how we all need love to fill the spaces in our hearts & lives.

I enjoyed reading the book which is composed of five short stories. This engaging easy to read book intertwines romance, mystery, and history. The author does a nice job drawing the reader into feeling as if he/she is in Budapest. The reader not only senses the grittiness of the post-communistic city and the frenetic pace of city life but also the beauty and culture that surrounds Budapest. Even though each short story could stand on its own, some of the characters connected throughout the book. The characters are interesting, often showing resilience and eternal hope.
